WORKDAY Business Milestone Formula
Learn how to project delivery dates in Excel with WORKDAY and WORKDAY.INTL. Automatically skip weekends, add national holidays, and set custom shifts.
Customer warranty centers, repair depots, and procurement departments constantly promise delivery targets based on working days. For example, a warranty contract might promise: "Your device will be inspected and repaired within 10 business days."
If a technician simply adds 10 days to the calendar (=ReceivedDate + 10), the promise date frequently lands on a Saturday, a Sunday, or an observed national holiday when the shop is completely closed. When customers arrive on a closed weekend, satisfaction drops and complaints rise.
To calculate true completion dates that skip non-working days automatically, Excel provides two forward-planning formulas: WORKDAY and WORKDAY.INTL.
Quick Comparison: WORKDAY vs WORKDAY.INTL
While NETWORKDAYS counts how many days fall between two dates, WORKDAY does the reverse: it starts at a date and travels forward (or backward) by a specified number of business days to find the target date.
| Formula | Weekend Rule | Custom Shift Strings | Best Fit in Real Work |
|---|---|---|---|
WORKDAY |
Locked to Saturday & Sunday | No | Standard 5-day corporate office delivery schedules and warranty deadlines. |
WORKDAY.INTL |
Custom 1-day or 2-day weekends | Yes (via 7-digit binary string) | Regional offices (Friday-Saturday), retail maintenance shifts, and 6-day factory floors. |
Deep Technical Mechanics
1. The Start Date Is Zero (Not Day One)
A crucial detail when calculating milestones: Excel does not count the start date itself as working day number 1. If an item arrives on Monday morning (2026-11-02) and requires 1 business day of repair, the formula returns Tuesday (2026-11-03). Monday is the starting baseline.
2. Moving Forward vs Moving Backward
The days parameter can be positive or negative:
- Positive days: Projects future target deadlines (e.g., SLA turnaround dates, delivery dates).
- Negative days: Calculates past deadlines backwards (e.g., finding the latest date to order parts before an assembly milestone:
=WORKDAY(MilestoneDate, -15)).
3. The WORKDAY Formula Syntax
=WORKDAY(start_date, days, [holidays])
You provide the starting date, the number of working days required, and an optional list of official holiday dates. Excel skips all Saturdays, Sundays, and dates matching your holiday list.
4. Custom Weekends with WORKDAY.INTL
When operating across international branches or different work shifts, use WORKDAY.INTL:
=WORKDAY.INTL(start_date, days, [weekend], [holidays])
Popular weekend parameters include:
1: Saturday and Sunday off (Standard default).7: Friday and Saturday off (Middle East standard).11: Sunday only off (6-day work week)."0000110": Friday and Saturday off using the 7-digit binary string pattern ("MTWTFSS").
Common Pitfalls & Formatting Tips
- Raw Serial Number Display: If your formula outputs a number like
46342instead of a date, do not worry. Excel calculates dates as serial numbers. Simply select the cell and format it as Short Date (Ctrl + Shift + #). - Fractional Day Arguments: If you pass a decimal number for days (e.g.
2.8days), Excel truncates the decimal and evaluates only the whole integer (2days). - Holiday Overlaps: If an observed holiday falls on a weekend, Excel will not double-deduct it.
Hands-on Practice Playground
Use the equipment service ticket board below to project realistic customer pickup dates. Follow the objectives to verify your formulas.
In cell D2, project the ready date for ticket REP-301 using the received date and 10 SLA working days.
In cell D2, calculate the estimated completion date for ticket REP-301 by adding the 10 SLA working days in C2 to the received date in B2 using the WORKDAY formula.
In cell E2, project the ready date assuming a Friday-Saturday regional weekend shift (weekend code 7).
For regional service centers where Friday and Saturday are non-working days (weekend code 7), calculate the completion date in cell E2 using WORKDAY.INTL.
In cell D3, project the expedited ready date for ticket REP-302 with a 5-day SLA.
Ticket REP-302 has an expedited 5-day SLA. Project its completion date in cell D3 from received date B3 and SLA days C3 using WORKDAY.
