CELL & INFO Inspection Formulas
Learn how to inspect cell metadata in Excel using CELL and INFO. Extract workbook file paths, current sheet names, and cell formatting codes easily.
Auditors and corporate compliance teams must verify that financial models are stored in authorized corporate network directories rather than unmonitored local hard drives. Analysts also need to display worksheet names dynamically in executive headers without typing them by hand.
The CELL and INFO formulas provide direct access to Excel metadata: file directories, active worksheet names, cell formatting codes, and operating system versions.
Quick Comparison: CELL vs INFO
| Formula | Scope | Key Properties | Best Fit in Real Work |
|---|---|---|---|
CELL(info_type, [reference]) |
Specific worksheet cell | "filename", "format", "col", "address" |
Extracting worksheet names and auditing number formatting. |
INFO(type_text) |
Entire Excel operating environment | "osversion", "release", "directory" |
System compatibility audits and tracking Excel versions across teams. |
Essential Mechanics and Traps
1. Always Provide the [reference] Argument
If you call =CELL("format") without specifying a cell reference, Excel returns information about the last cell that was modified! This makes the formula unpredictable. Always provide an explicit target: =CELL("format", B2).
2. The Saved Workbook Requirement
If a workbook is brand new and has not yet been saved to disk, CELL("filename", A1) returns an empty string (""). Save your file first so Excel can generate the path.
Hands-on Practice Playground
Audit cell properties and file metadata using the compliance table below. Follow each objective to complete the exercise.
In cell D2, check the number formatting code of cell B2 using the CELL formula.
In cell D2, inspect the number format code applied to cell B2 using the CELL formula with the "format" property.
In cell D3, extract the file path referencing cell A1.
Compliance requires verifying the physical storage location. In cell D3, extract the full workbook directory and sheet path referencing cell A1 using the CELL formula with "filename".
In cell D5, find the numeric column number of cell E2 using the col property.
In cell D5, determine the numeric column coordinate of cell E2 using the CELL formula with the "col" property.
