Google Sheets Parity: Context Menu, Alternating Colors, Data Cleanup, and Spreadsheet Basics Track

We are thrilled to roll out one of our most requested updates yet: Google Sheets Feature Parity & The Spreadsheet Basics Learning Track! Up until now, mastering spreadsheets often jumped straight into formulas. But in the real world, manipulating cell grids, cleaning dirty datasets, and formatting tables are just as crucial as writing advanced functions.

In this release, we have upgraded our custom spreadsheet engine with desktop-grade productivity tools, smart modals, and a dedicated 5-part curriculum designed for everyone from total beginners to spreadsheet power users.

1. Google Sheets-Style Right-Click Context Menu

Right-clicking anywhere on the grid now opens a native, high-speed context menu loaded with spreadsheet workflows:

  • Full Clipboard Actions: Instant Cut (Ctrl+X), Copy (Ctrl+C), and Paste (Ctrl+V) with active bounding box indicators.
  • Paste Special: Paste only raw calculated values without overwriting styles, or paste only styling and number formatting.
  • Row & Column Management: Insert 1 row above/below and insert 1 column left/right on the fly.
  • Cell Shifting Operations: Insert cells and shift right/down, or delete cells and shift left/up without breaking surrounding layout coordinates.
  • Quick Formatting & Controls: 1-click Clear Formatting, Insert Interactive Checkbox, Dropdown List validation, and Zebra Striping palette.

2. Alternating Colors (Zebra Striping) with Live Previews

Making large financial tables and inventory lists readable is now effortless. Open the Alternating Colors Modal from the Format menu or context menu to choose from 7 pre-designed color palettes (Slate Gray, Ocean Blue, Mint Green, Royal Purple, Teal Forest, Warm Amber, Coral Rose). Check the live interactive mini-table preview and apply high-contrast headers with alternating row backgrounds in a single click.

3. Data Cleanup & Text Transformation Suite

Dirty, misaligned data is a nightmare to analyze. We added 3 essential data cleanup tools right into the Data menu:

  • Trim Whitespace: Cleans up accidental leading spaces, trailing tabs, and double spacing across all highlighted cells.
  • Remove Duplicates: Scans the active selection and deletes duplicate rows automatically while keeping the first unique occurrence.
  • Split Text to Columns Modal: Break delimited strings (like full names, address lines, or CSV extracts) into separate adjacent columns with support for commas, semicolons, spaces, tabs, or custom delimiter characters.

4. Brand New Curriculum: "Spreadsheet Basics" Track

We launched a brand new 5-exercise track at /exercises dedicated to spreadsheet fundamentals beyond standalone formulas:

  1. CELL-ARITHMETIC: Master basic mathematical operators (+, -, *, /, ^, %) and PEMDAS precedence with parentheses.
  2. CELL-REFERENCING: Understand relative vs absolute references ($A$1, $A1, A$1) to lock tax rates and multiplier constants when propagating formulas.
  3. AUTOFILL-PROPAGATION: Discover fill handle dragging, sequence auto-increments (dates, quarters, numbering), and formula propagation across large sheets.
  4. TEXT-CONCATENATION: Combine text strings, SKU codes, and live values dynamically using the & ampersand operator.
  5. CROSS-SHEET-REFERENCING: Link, aggregate, and calculate numbers across multiple workbook tabs using SheetName!Cell reference syntax.

5. Complete Keyboard & Mobile Responsiveness

All newly added menus, shortcuts, and modals are fully keyboard-navigable and touch-friendly for both desktop workflows and mobile on-the-go practice.
